There are
a number of resources available to assist you in learning to
sail or improving your skills. Lake Harriet Yacht Club offers
clinics and classes on racing for both those just starting out
and for experienced sailors seeking to improve their technique.
Our neighboring club, the Lake Calhoun Yacht Club, operates
a sailing school and offers classes for kids and adults throughout
the summer. For learning the basics of sailing, it is hard to
beat the classes offered by the Minneapolis Park and Recreation
Board. These classes for adults and kids, using on and off the
water instruction, cover all the basic sailing terms and parts
of the boat, rigging the boat, basic knots, sailing principles
from tacking and jibing, sailing upwind, downwind and across
wind, and landing at a mooring or dock along with righting an
overturned boat. The Twin Cities Sailing Club maintains a fleet
of boats on Lake Harriet for the use of its members and offers
training multiple times per week. Membership is open to adults
of all sailing abilities -- from beginners to experienced sailors.
TCSC members under an arrangement with Lake Harriet Yacht Club
may race in LHYC races. Whatever your age, it is never too early
or too late to learn and enjoy sailing!
