Lake Harriet Sailors and Friends,
Before I get to the Commodore Cup report, we need volunteers for the Race Committee and an MC and M16 fleet captain for next year. If you are interested, please send Mark Anderson,

Commodore Cup Report
As many of you correctly assumed, we had a team racing regatta for this year's Commodore's Cup, held last Saturday. A big thank you to the six brave souls who showed up and endured the cold and rain to compete for the Commodore's Cup. For those of you who have not experienced team racing, a race consists of two teams of three, with the winning team being the one with the best finishing combination. So a team that finishes 2nd, 3rd, and 4th beats a team that finishes 1st, 5th, and 6th.
This year, Team 1 consisted of Jim Marquardt, Dan Olson from TCSC, and Dave Hansen, and Team 2 consisted of Charlie Gantzer, Robert and Maddy Netzer, and Ted Jewet and David Saltzman. The wind was 10-12 mph out of the west, which allowed us to sail 7 races on a trapezoid course. While a couple of the racers had team racing experience, most did not, but that did not slow down the team racing. Within one race, all the competitors were using team tactics at the start, helping out teammates on the course, and performing mark traps. It was very impressive. As for the results, the teams could not have been more even. Team 2 built an early lead by winning 3 races to Team 1's 2 race wins, but Team 1 was able to take race 6 to take the Commodore's Cup into the final race match point. In the last race, Team 1 had a great start, but a capsize on Team 1 was the deciding factor, allowing Team 2 to cruise to the win. Your Commodore's Cup champions are Charlie Gantzer, Robert and Maddy Netzer, and Ted Jewet and David Saltzman.
That night a big thank you to Jenny Fricton for cooking chili and hot apple cider for the Commodore's Cup party. We had a great crowd at the party, with the revelers staying until past midnight.
Another thank you to all the competitors for being good sports about trying Team Racing. It is a form of sailboat racing that I really enjoy and is a nice change of pace to our typical fleet racing.
Information for Boat Lift Removal
With everyone's focus on Aquatic Invasive Species prevention, the biggest concern is transporting dirty boats and lifts. While our boats are generally clean when we put them away for the winter, our boat lifts are a different matter. Many of us take our lifts directly to storage in the Fall, leaving the grime and growth safe on the barrels, and then return them directly to the lake in the Spring. The DNR and MPRB understand that cleaning the lifts may do more harm than good, and that loosening the growth on the lifts may actually do more to spread Aquatic Invasive Species then to help. As a result, the MPRB has asked us to fill out the form accessible
HERE, which essentially is a promise that we leave the lifts out of the water for 21 days. I have been in contact with the MPRB about the lift issue and have asked the MPRB to educate the boat inspectors of this issue. If you have any problems or have questions. Call me 651-357-7918 or send me an email

Boat Removal Date
Don't forget that all boats must be removed from buoys by October 14, 2013.
